Apprenticeship basics

What is an Apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship combines paid employment with practical and academic learning. The apprentice works for an employer from the start of the programme and develops skills both on and off the job.

WHO IS AN APPRENTICESHIP FOR?

There are lots of different reasons that a young person may pick to do an apprenticeship over a college or university course.

Learning style
For some, learning in a purely classroom based setting is not for them and they prefer to mix theory with practice and practical tasks.

Financial
Apprentices are paid a wage from the first day they begin their course. This learn and earn approach is appealing to those who do not want to accumulate debt whilst gaining qualifications.

Passion
For some, they may already have a passion for a certain industry or a certain discipline and know that’s what they want to pursue. An apprenticeship can get them into the industry and give them workplace experience from which they can progress their career.

Advice and Guidance

Clear answers to the most common questions about starting an apprenticeship, applying for opportunities and choosing the right route.

How long does an apprenticeship take?

Apprenticeships usually take between 12 and 48 months to complete. The exact length depends on the apprenticeship level, qualification and any relevant prior learning or experience.

What is involved?

Apprentices combine paid workplace learning with structured training. This may include day release, block release, training at a college or learning delivered directly in the workplace.

Is there an age limit?

Apprenticeships can generally be started from the age of 16 after completing Year 11. There is no upper age limit, so adults can also begin an apprenticeship later in their career.

Can existing employees take an apprenticeship?

Yes. Apprenticeships can be used to upskill existing employees, support professional development or prepare someone for a more senior or specialist role.

When should I apply?

Applicants should begin looking as early as possible, especially during the academic year before they want to start. Recruitment dates vary by employer, so opportunities may appear at different times throughout the year.

People who have already completed their studies or are already employed can also apply when suitable vacancies become available.

Can I apply to college or university as well?

Yes. Applying for college or university alongside apprenticeships can help keep your options open while you decide which route is right for you.

How do I find apprenticeship opportunities?

Apprenticeship opportunities are advertised throughout the year, and competition can be high. Check vacancy pages regularly, register your interest where available and prepare your application early.

The Government’s Find an Apprenticeship service is also a useful place to search for current opportunities by location and area of interest.
